Alice J. Serumgard O’Neal
Re: Valentines Collection
On Valentine’s Day this year the Lake Region Heritage Center will be showcasing a new exhibit donated from the family of the late Alice J. Serumgard O’Neal. The Valentines, which date from the 1920’s to the 1940’s, will be displayed on the main floor of the Old Post Office Museum. The cards are part of a collection of items that Mrs. O’Neal accrued during her time as an educator in North Dakota. Born in 1903 north of Webster ND, Alice and her five siblings grew up on the family farm and attended school in the area. In 1920 Alice graduated as Valedictorian of her class and moved with her family to Devils Lake. In 1921 she attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and from there she began teaching in Church’s Ferry. During her years of teaching Alice taught in the Sanborn, McVille, and eventually Devils Lake communities. During her time in Devils Lake she taught the fourth grade at the Lincoln School and later at the newly built Central School. Here she lived and taught until she married Eugene O’Neal in 1941 and moved to Wyoming. For more information on Alice’s life and to view the unique Valentines collection please stop in at the museum next Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm.
